This species is nonetheless a frequent sight on the Yemeni island said to be the “Galapagos Islands for botanists,” and our offerings are propagated from material that originated there. This succulent milkweed is one of the better-known entry plants into the larger Asclepiadaceae family, whose members are noted for their foul-odored flowers and colorful succulent stems. The pale green coloration of the stems on this species is a highlight, especially when acting as a contrasting backdrop for the highly saturated red, starfish-shaped flowers. It has a reputation for being challenging to grow, but this is largely due to its being more widely cultivated than most stapeliads, which all present similar challenges.
