If South Africa is know for the inexplicable phenomenon of curling leaves, Madagascar should be know for its zig-zagging spiny branches, an adaptation that repeats itself across a multitude of unrelated and otherwise entirely different plants. The majority of these plants are native to the spiny forests of Southeastern Madagascar, where dense fog shrouds this otherwise dry ecoregion throughout the year. It's theorized that this growth pattern is an adaptation cleverly designed to catch this moisture and let droplets accumulate around the spiny points, eventually dropping into the soil to slowly irrigate the plants. This species is one of the rarer and more sought after plants from this ecoregion, probably because it embodies this trait so clearly and only gets better with age. We find this species to be relatively easy to grow but wants a lot more water than its habitat suggests, needing regular waterings to keep the green branches dotted with succulent green leaves. It will still photosynthesize without them, so we find it essential to give a little bit of moisture even while its not in active growth.
