SH2211

This is an unidentified species grown from seed originally collected by Steven Hammer in Kalkgat, South Africa many years ago. The collection notes simply read “skinny noodles,” an apt description that places it loosely alongside other members of the genus such as Monilaria obconica or M. moniliforme, which it superficially resembles. That said, this putative sp. nova stands out for having even thinner stems than most Monilaria. It exhibits the same seasonal dimorphic growth typical of the genus, shifting character noticeably between active growth and dormancy. Like its other Monilaria, it is a strict winter grower and maintains a growth cycle similar to that of Conophytum and other residents of South Africa’s Namaqualand.
