It was once given the name \u003cem data-end=\"397\" data-start=\"374\"\u003eStapelia comparabilis\u003c\/em\u003e by White and Sloane (of Whitesloanea fame), but most people now consider it a hybrid made in cultivation and it is also distributed as x Tromostapelia or Staplelia mutabilis. With large, dark maroon to almost black flowers, it makes sense that this clone has persisted as one of the more time-tested members of a family whose blooms require a certain morbid curiosity to appreciate. Despite its long history, whatever this plant is seems to have slipped out of regular cultivation, at least in the US.
