adenia-glauca-x-pechuelii
Adenia glauca x pechuelii

While we were initially skeptical that this hybrid cross between Adenia pechuelii and A. glauca would work, our experiment with two geographically and genetically distant species has clearly produced fruitful results. Typically, we try to produce pure seedlings of A. pechuelii, but a lone flowering female led us to test some of the pollen that our A. glauca produce plentifully. Adenia species often make sterile seed pods that end up being completely empty, but to our surprise, these fruits were full of viable seed. The resulting plants surprisingly favor the pollen parent, A. glauca, in leaf shape but have the unique pale blue color of A. pechuelii, along with what appears to be its narrow-branched habit. We suspect that these hybrids will continue to look more like the seed-bearing A. pechuelii, with thin branches growing from an increasingly thick caudex. They should be slightly more arborescent than the softer-bodied A. glauca and definitely squatter. Despite the fact that A. glauca is from a much more tropical environment than A. pechuelii, both species have fairly similar requirements in cultivation. We suspect these hybrids will have the longer growing season of A. glauca and potentially be faster-growing than either parent, thanks to hybrid vigor. It’s tempting to keep all of them out of pure curiosity, but we’ve decided to release a few in what must be a first-time offering from any nursery.
