While most members are true vining geophytes with tubers happily buried in deep soil, this species makes a conical mound of woody plant tissue shaped a bit like a 2-foot-tall volcano. On the surface of the caudex is a very distinctive “melted wax” texture, with bumps that ripple across the amorphous blob of a tuber. Seasonal vines of bright green foliage with a subtle hairy covering grow vigorously from this strange stump as it visibly expands, with strands of new green flesh cracking through the knobby surface. This species is from a wide range across tropical northeastern Africa, where it grows alongside scattered caudiciforms and deciduous trees in semi-arid woodlands.
