cheiridopsis-cigarettifera-sb768
Cheiridopsis cigarettifera SB768

While we admonish any attempt to glorify such a deadly habit, Cheiridopsis cigarettifera makes it somewhat difficult with its very apt and cool name. It’s also one of the more attractive members of the genus, occupying a range of forms but always making slender leaves reminiscent of the plant’s namesake. In spite of the elongated foliage, the plant never appears leggy when given adequate light, thanks to the compact clusters of tightly packed leaf pairs and the powdery blue-white covering so distinctive of sun-loving succulents. The leaf pairs separate to let large yellow flowers take over the plant for a brief period, followed by a new leaf pair emerging from the center. This shorter-leaved form is propagated from a Steven Brack collection at Kosies in South Africa’s winter-growing Namaqualand region. Like other Cheiridopsis, it’s not picky about its growing season and can remain active year-round.
