Habitat photos from its native Guadalupe Island easily prove why, showing this true caudiciform with its thick, club-like branches windswept against the red volcanic substrate. One of the most iconic inhabitants of the biodiversity hotspot off the coast of Baja California, this species is known only from one small part of the remote island and resembles little else in the genus or among other flora of the region. Guadalupe Island is famous for its dozens of endemic plant and animal species, many of which were threatened by human-introduced goats until the island was designated a biosphere reserve in 2005. Since then, the goat population has been entirely eradicated and the island has been closed to visitors, resulting in many of the endangered species rebounding in a very short time. Cistanthe guadalupensis has remained exceedingly rare in cultivation and is typically offered only as a cutting, if sold at all.
