dracaena-cinnabari
Dracaena cinnabari

The famous “dragon tree” of Socotra, this species is surprisingly poorly represented in cultivation despite being one of the most widespread and well-known endemic plants from this island off the coast of Yemen, often regarded as the “Galapagos Islands for plant life” due to its astonishing array of unusual endemic species. The prevalence of this species across the island has made it the umbrella species for conservationists working to preserve its unique flora, due to the fact that protecting any Dracaena cinnabari habitat would consequently preserve the habitat of any other rare endemic. The slow rate of growth is likely the reason this species is much rarer in cultivation than some species that are much less common in the wild, like Dorstenia gigas. Those who have even seen this species offered for sale will likely recognize the plant on offer as relatively “large,” with fully grown trees being almost entirely unseen anywhere but the island. Despite being slow-growing, this species isn’t particularly hard to cultivate if given enough root space in an almost soil-free mix and ample water during the growing season.
