echidnopsis-malum
Echidnopsis malum

Echidnopsis malum is named for its distinct apple-shaped flowers, with fused, inflated petals that truly do resemble a miniature version of the fruit! This plant is native to Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, where it grows in and among limestone rocks and detritus, and sometimes completely beneath them. Like many members of the genus, the species has a highly cryptic nature, with stems growing as pseudo-rhizomes that snake under and between rocks and debris, only peeking out in small areas to photosynthesize and flower. In cultivation, this translates into a preference for a somewhat shallow but wide area to grow in, and the stems are best planted almost entirely below the media. They truly do best when only a quarter of the plant is visible, with the rest fully underground. We grow our plants in nursery flats filled with a mix of limestone chips and pumice, stored on the bottom shelves of our greenhouses where they receive very little light. This seems to be the optimal condition for them, as they flourish and grow rapidly for us!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0912/1175/9896/files/echidnopsismallum_b54aaa4e-bfcf-41a2-9641-9395a633cbf0.png?v=1785377041
