fouquieria-columnaris
Fouquieria columnaris

The famous “Boojum” tree of Baja California needs little introduction to enthusiasts of plants from this region, being one of the most iconic representatives of the botanically rich central desert region. Also known as the “cirio” locally, Fouquieria columnaris can grow to be a towering 70 ft tall tree with no canopy, making only a slender trunk covered with short spiny branches and tiny leaves that fall during periods of drought. The species also seems just as happy growing in small crevices and rock cracks, where it’s restricted to a thick, stumpy mass that never grows taller than a foot but still shows the same time-worn characteristics as the ancient trees nearby. Named for a monster from a poem by Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll, this unusual-looking species is also somewhat of a taxonomic mystery, with only loose similarities to Fouquieria purpusii and fasciculata, which themselves are distinct from the rest of a genus that has few known relatives in the entire plant kingdom. The region of Baja where it grows is influenced by both the winter-rainfall Mediterranean climate of California and the summer-rainfall habitat of the Sonoran Desert, receiving moisture in the form of sporadic monsoons. In cultivation, they are active mostly during the winter, and we hold back watering if they drop leaves due to heat.
