Even in the pampered conditions of a cactus cultivator, this discoid species is one of the few that is shy to emerge from underground and can remain perpetually compact, only forming more flattened offsets with age. It is known from the lower elevations of Argentina’s Catamarca region, where it grows near salt flats in soils with high salinity at the surface. It’s no surprise that this species makes impressively thick tuberous root systems deep underground, sometimes exceeding the volume of the visible part of the cactus several times over. Despite being slow-growing, this is one of the more forgiving miniature globular cacti in cultivation, as demonstrated by the ancient clusters frequently seen in decades-old cactus collections.
