jatropha-podagrica
Jatropha podagrica

One of the few caudiciforms that has been circulated widely enough in cultivation to have earned a common name, Jatropha podagrica, or “Buddha belly,” is a perfect entry plant for beginner caudiciform enthusiasts. This native of tropical southern Mexico and Central America makes a corpulent, bottle-shaped trunk that grows at a measurable pace, unlike many plants in this category. Within a few years, one can expect a specimen of respectable size that is ideal for bonsai staging. Large palmate leaves on long petioles emerge from branch tips protected by spines, making a canopy over the semi-soft, water-storing trunk. In the spring and throughout the summer, the plant makes a surprisingly attractive floral display of fluorescent orange blooms suspended above the plant on long inflorescences. Our plants are seed-grown examples from parents selected for nice spination. They are approaching specimen size and are already capable of flowering.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0912/1175/9896/files/jatrophapodagrica_4177fecd-d8d8-42c0-8b81-db81b3d87766.png?v=1785377160
