momordica-rostrata
Momordica rostrata

Momordica rostrata is one of the many caudex-forming members of Cucurbitaceae, the cucumber/squash family. This subcategory of plants typically makes a large water-storing tuber that produces seasonal vines, often buried completely underground. This species happens to be one of the curious few that produces its engorged stem almost completely above ground, thus making it particularly suited for container growing by the caudiciform enthusiast. It’s also one of the more forgiving members of this group, being slightly more tolerant of cold than others and having a growth rate that can be visibly measured from year to year. While it can become an impressively sized natural bonsai specimen in a reasonable amount of time, few examples in cultivation match the almost tree-like proportions of plants in the wild, which can grow over 20 feet tall. Thankfully, cultivation-grown specimens are capable of flowering very young, and when pollinated, the fruit is large and shaped like a chili pepper, with an orange hue very distinctive of this family famous for pumpkins and other residents of autumnal cornucopias. From a wide stretch of tropical Northeast Africa, where it can be found in the Acacia-Commiphora woodlands.
