What looks like a scattering of separate plants above ground can be connected beneath the soil, with new shoots appearing as the rhizomes extend. Its small red flowers emerge near the stem tips and are only about a centimeter across, with wrinkled, velvety lobes that look like little pieces of crushed fabric. These blooms are more reminiscent of Caralluma than the broad, boldly patterned flowers often associated with Orbea. The resemblance has some taxonomic history behind it, with the species having been placed in both Caralluma and Australluma.\u003cbr\u003e\nIts range extends through Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini into northeastern South Africa, where it occupies rock crevices and shallow pockets of soil, sometimes growing among leaf litter in dry woodland. In cultivation, this is a good introduction to the smaller stapeliads.
