Discovered in 1951, this species is known from a highly localized area of Oaxaca, where it grows along remote limestone cliffs at elevations above 6,000 feet. The surrounding rocks support colonies of orange and lime green lichens that almost exactly match the plant’s coloration, making this unusual palette surprisingly effective camouflage. The rusty patches also develop in cultivation and are a familiar feature of the species. Even its small red fruits remain largely concealed within the body after ripening, a habit known as cryptocarpy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn cultivation, give this species a gritty mix with limestone and very little organic matter, along with full to lightly filtered sunlight. Growth takes place with daytime temperatures around 70–100°F, and bright yellow flowers often announce the end of dormancy. Ease into watering as growth resumes, allowing the roots and mix to remain dry for at least a week between waterings to maintain healthy, compact plants.
