pachycormus-discolor
Pachycormus discolor

Pachycormus discolor is the only member of its genus and one of the few winter-growing “pachycaul” trees often collected by succulent and bonsai enthusiasts. Both the term “pachycaul” and the name Pachycormus translate to “thick stem,” and this species exemplifies it very well. In its native Baja California habitat, trees can be seen growing completely flat against the ground, with engorged branches that sprawl across the surface from decades of being aggressively windswept. In the same habitat, you might see the same species growing as a typical tree in a protected area and another example in an exposed rock crevice with little branching at all and just a perfectly round tuber-like trunk. There can be some variability between distinct populations in flower color, and it’s possible the growth habit is partially informed by genetics. Our parent plants were selected for having particularly rotund trunks in hopes of isolating this trait in future generations. The seedlings on offer are already exhibiting nice form, and we prefer to keep the exposed part of the trunk, as seen in the photo, buried to help attain maximum volume. While their growing season is mostly during the winter, we find this species to be opportunistic and continue growing through heat if given enough water in a well-drained mix.
