pelargonium-cotyledonis
Pelargonium cotyledonis

Although St. Helena is most famous for being the island that Napoleon was banished to, it is well known among botanists for its rich biodiversity and endemic plant life. Most of these local endemics have remained rare in cultivation, but Pelargonium cotyledonis is one of the few plants native to that region that has found its way into cultivation, being particularly well suited to both succulent collections and Mediterranean climates. It very closely resembles many of the low-branching, slow-growing pachycaul Pelargoniums of South Africa and is equally well suited to natural bonsai, requiring no training to develop a compact form. The round leaves have a bumpy, bullate texture and are slightly fuzzy, growing from a brown stem with distinctive peeling bark. We find this to be an easy species to grow, enjoying regular watering during its active growth season, which can sometimes be all year depending on your climate.
