The bulbous hood and narrow entrance give each pitcher its characteristic parrot-like appearance. Prey enters through an opening beneath the hood and is guided farther inside by translucent windows in the pitcher. Dense, inward-pointing hairs make it progressively more difficult for the animal to reverse direction. The species occurs in habitats that are regularly flooded and is unusually well adapted to temporary submersion. Submerged traps can capture aquatic insects, tadpoles and small fish. This semi-aquatic behavior, together with its distinctive prostrate pitchers, makes Sarracenia psittacina one of the most specialized members of the genus.\u003cbr\u003e This unusual form is anthocyanin-free, which results in amazing all-green pitchers. Anthocyanins are pigments that give Sarracenia their beautiful red, purple, and blue hues but also serve an important role in protecting plants from intense sunlight.
