Rather than producing upright pitchers, it forms prostrate traps that radiate across the surface of the soil. The bulbous hood and narrow entrance give each pitcher its characteristic parrot-like appearance. Prey enters through an opening beneath the hood and is guided farther inside by translucent windows in the pitcher. Dense, inward-pointing hairs make it progressively more difficult for the animal to reverse direction. The species occurs in habitats that are regularly flooded and is unusually well adapted to temporary submersion. Submerged traps can capture aquatic insects, tadpoles and small fish.
