Nothing else matches it besides Huernia pillansii, a close relative despite a long distance separating them geographically. In his revision of the group, Peter Bruyns noted that molecular work placed this plant surprisingly close to Stapelianthus decaryi, despite its extreme distinctiveness in the flesh. He wrote that S. pilosus “has so many autapomorphies that it could be said to be immediately recognizable among all of the three hundred and twenty or so species of stapeliads, whether it is in flower or not. It is interesting that this is not corroborated by the molecular characters.” In fall it produces clusters of dime sized flowers near the base of the stems, yellow with irregular red blotching.
