turbinicarpus-booleanus
Turbinicarpus booleanus

Turbinicarpus booleanus, considered Rapicactus booleanus by some, is from the chalky gypsum outcrops of Galeana in Nuevo León, Mexico. This species has a very unusual “ostrich neck” growth habit, forming a familiar globular head extended on a long, thin neck. In nature, this stem sometimes helps the species emerge from impossibly tight cracks in rocks. Wild plants still often resemble those in cultivation, with awkward, lanky necks that somehow carry the weight of their oversized rotund heads (a relatable predicament for some of us, unfortunately). This slow-growing species makes lovely pink flowers throughout the growing season and can form a tuberous root system underground, making its thin “neck” look even more out of proportion. As we’ve found with many other gypsophiles, this species seems to benefit from some gypsum added to the mix, which may help with the sensitivity to water often associated with these cryptic cacti.
